DLD Webinars: Supporting DLD in Specific Subjects all Webinars

Specialist Teacher Sue Marr, Highly Specialist Speech and Language Therapist Hilary Nicoll and Highly Specialist Occupational Therapist Debbie Burridge deliver this programme, building on the fundamentals of DLD (Series 1), exploring the reasons why children with DLD struggle in specific subject areas and providing activities and approaches to support the development of key skills.

The webinar series is very action-focused, so by the end of the sessions you will both understand the different aspects of language disorder and have some clear, actionable steps, tools and strategies that you can put into place the next day. The advice and approaches are tailored to what is possible in a busy mainstream classroom and will help the children with DLD as well as typically developing peers.

The sessions are all held as twilight, one-hour sessions which can be attended live as well as via a full video replay available until the end of 2024.

Why do children with DLD struggle to access the PE curriculum?  As teachers we use language across all curriculum areas, and DLD impacts children’s ability to understand the content of lessons and to follow instructions.  In this webinar, Specialist Teacher Sue Marr will consider these and other difficulties and how you can support children will DLD in PE lessons.  

Physical education and all sports require a high level of competency in gross motor skills. Children who struggle in this area will have difficulty participating in and enjoying this subject area. Highly Specialist Occupational Therapist Debbie Burridge will discuss the impact this has and possible ways to help students overcome or mitigate their difficulties.

Children with DLD may have difficulties with understanding and following instructions which can cause significant challenges in practical subject areas. In this webinar, Specialist Teacher Sue Marr will explore why children with DLD struggle to access DT and Food Technology lessons and will share how to develop key skills to support the learning in theses curriculum areas 

Practical subjects such as DT and Food Studies require a high degree of fine and gross motor skills. Children who struggle in this area will have difficulty participating in and enjoying this subject area. Highly Specialist Occupational Therapist Debbie Burridge will discuss the impact these difficulties have and possible ways to help students overcome or mitigate their difficulties.
